Morrison wins gold again Posted on: Monday 11th August 2008 Bookmark This | Print This Page | Send To A Friend | Post A Comment Not to be lost in all the Beijing and London Triathlon stories, this weekend also saw the World Long Distance Duathlon Championships taking place in Geel, Belgium. Once again, Great Britain proved that it is a serious force when it comes to winning medals at Major Championships. The multi-talented Catriona Morrison won gold, just three months after major knee surgery, proving that she's one of the toughest, and most successful duathletes the sport has seen. Morrison cruised to a convincing victory ahead of Mariska Kramer-Postma (NED) and Urlike Shwalbe (GER), and in doing so retained her World Championship title from last year. Michelle Lee, who has also undergone knee surgery, finished in fifth place. In the men's race, Joerie Vansteelant continued to carry on the legacy of his late brother, the multiple World Champion Benny Vansteelant, by also retaining his World title from last year. Joerie finished over four minutes ahead of fellow Belgian Bart Aeronout, with the bronze medal going to Lino Barruncho from Portugal. The first British male team member was Oli Mott, who went one better than last year to finish in ninth place. Matt Moorhouse finished 14th, while Piercy was a DNF.

Emma Dews, previously awarded the Tri247 Gatorade athlete of the month award, won the age-group race overall in a time of 3:54:45, which would have put her in eighth place in the women's elite race.
