Henry Budgett reports on events at the Merell Mudman Duathlon and Merrell Mudman Run held today in Camberley, Surrey.

Not as cold as forecast but with a chilly wind and far more mud than the last time the race ran at this venue back in the Spring. Several of the leaders were unfortunate enough to be dazzled in the early Winter sunshine on emerging from the woods and missed a vital turn sign, so adding extra distance to their efforts. The attrition rate was, as always, pretty high and among those headed for an early afternoon on the sofa was Tim Brabants.

John Lunt's £100 cash bonus for a new run course record stayed in his wallet, Tim Weeks came close but there was no cigar. When we asked him where he knew that the prize was out of reach the answer was "around the top of the fourth hill!"

The MudMan will be back at the beginning of March but Human Race have slipped in an extra, and tougher, IceMan event on February 21st. Details on the Human Race website.

Full results of the duathlon are available HERE. An extremely high class men's podium with Colin Dixon (World Age Group Triathlon Champion in 2007), ahead of David Vaughan (European and World Age Group Duathlon Champion 2008) and Jim McConnel, regular pro athlete on the XTERRA world tour. The ladies event was also very close, with barely two minutes covering the podium positions, Aileen Anderson taking the win ahead of Carol Yarrow and Fay Cripps.
