Joerie Vansteelant and Ulrike Schwalbe winners at Powerman Italy

At the first edition of Powerman Italy in Malgrate/Lecco a top international field took to the roads for the last Powerman Duathlon event of the European season 2010.

From the start Joerie Vansteelant (BEL) set the pace and only Anthony Le Duey (FRA) was able to follow. After some 31 minutes back in the transition area, Vansteelant made a gap with a very fast change to bike and was from then an unchallanged leader. Current Powerman World Champion Andy Sutz (SUI) left transition one minute adrift and headed out for the demanding bike course over 80 km. After 35 km along Lake Como on a flat course heading to Bellagio, a 13 km long climbing was the challenge of the day. Sutz tried everything but with two falls on the wet and very slippery roads he lost more and more time. Back to Malgrate, Vansteelant's lead was impressive and he could cruise the second run, without any need to push to the limits. Sutz arrived with Soren Bystrup (DEN) minutes behind whilst the unlucky Frenchman Le Duey missed an intersection and had to give up in promising position. Eight minutes behind Vansteelant, Bystrup ran down Sutz on the last meters of the second run, consisting of another 10 km. Vansteelant said: “This was the perfect finale of this season. After a break, I will start my preparation for Powerman Zofingen 2011.”

In the women's race Ulrike Schwalbe (GER) won in 4:01:33 her second Powerman race in 2010 after Powerman Germany in May. Second was the Dane Susan Svendsen before the Swiss 2010 Powerman Vice-World Champion Jacqueline Uebelhart.

Powerman International President John Raadschelders and Powerman Zofingen World Championships President Stefan Ruf expressed there hope, that Powerman Malgrate/Lecco will become one of the Powerman top events in the near future. The lineup of international athletes was impressive and event organizer Renzo Straniero and his team Spartakus was the expected reliable partner.
